Watercolor Farm Portraits

Let the landscape come to life in every brushstroke.

There’s a sense of honor, grit, grace, and humility to be found on a farm that doesn’t exist anywhere else. In the Midwest, we love our idyllic farming landscapes and the balance of down-to-earth romanticism they represent. Both historic farms and working farms draw our attention and admiration. They capture our hopes and imagination while rooting us to the real. No matter where we come from, we can feel a sense of shared humanity through a painted depiction of a farm or ranch. For some, it evokes our collective agricultural roots. For others, it’s the personal experience of hard work and integrity, of dedication to land and family above all else.

A custom watercolor portrait is the ideal keepsake to honor and remember the family farm, ranch, or barn.

Watercolor Barn and Landscape Portraits

Barns, both new and old, are wrapped in stories — of past, and future. Fresh shingles and a new coat of red paint might tell the story of new life to come, crops harvested, animals fed, bales of hay stacked away for cold days ahead when snows pile up and the barn keeps its inhabitants sheltered and warm. Old barns let the light through, and the wind’s whistling song — the many decades of weather and age taking their toll as the barn itself still stands against the skyline, proud against the rainbow of sunrise and sunset.

Barns rising from rich, fertile fields below bring to mind community and family, as many hands came together in their creation. And they represent a sense of stewardship and protection, a silent watcher over the years, home to countless memories made.

Sharon painted three commissions for me as Christmas gifts — each a home that had special family significance. They were great! I love her work.
